Thank You

Thank you.

These are about the only words I can find to express myself to you.  I am grateful for all of you, for the ways you have loved and cared for Teresa and I, and for the ways you embraced us as your own three years ago.

Over the last three years we have been a part of this faith community, actively participating in the life of the church.  Our time here has been quite transformational and we thank you for allowing us to be a part of this family of faith.  You took us in fresh out of college and newly wed, welcoming us with open arms and trusting us with the youth of this church.  For this, we are thankful.

To think it has been three years is mind-boggling.  But what is even more difficult to grasp is that it is time to say goodbye.  Thankfully I am under the care of First Presbyterian Church during my time at seminary and thanks be to God seminary is only two hours away.  Nonetheless though, it will be different not being with the faithful four in the chapel when the bell chimes 8 times or to hear the noises in the hallway from CDO or Prime Timers or one of the Circles.  What I am going to miss the most though are those Sunday nights spent with the finest youth in Owensboro.  We’ve made many memories and have embarked on quite the adventures, and I am grateful for all of them.  You all have ministered to me and have shaped my faith in ways you do not know.  Again, for this, I am thankful.

So as I go, I leave you with this quote from Thomas Merton:

“Be good, keep your feet dry, your eyes open, your heart at peace and your soul in the joy of Christ.”

Friends of First Presbyterian Church, know we’ll think of you often, pray for you daily, and look forward to the day when we can be together again.

Until then…

Shalom my friends, shalom.

With deep love and gratitude,

Adam & Teresa Quine

Kirk Night

Our next Kirk night will be held on Sunday, September 12 at 5:00 PM with speaker, Jim Garrett, who will speak on behalf of our Mission Commission’s Disaster Relief Workgroup about how our congregation can best serve our community in the event of any catastrophic event.  Jim will be representing both Presbyterian Disaster Assistance and the Commonwealth of Kentucky.   We hope you will join us for dinner and an excellent program.

PrimeTimers

Is there such a thing as “good” grief?
And can grieving bring you relief?
Our own pastor will direct
A discussion on this subject.
It should be insightful, he is our Commander in Chief.

So join us on August 17th (next Tuesday).
We'll gather to meet, eat and pray.
We begin at 10:30 that morning,
And we'll meet rain, shine or storming.
So try to attend, you can even bring a friend,
Just let us know, as our chef we'll be informing.

Dinner and a play August 27th

Multicultural Festival

The Multicultural Festival is just around the corner. Plans are shaping up nicely to host the community on our lawn for the 12th Annual Multicultural Festival Saturday August 21 from 11 to 6. There are a couple of things you can do now to help.

    1. Put a sign in your yard to announce the festival. The signs are at the Clinton Pl. entrance.  Please be sure to sign out the sign you take by its number and place the sign on your property, not the city or county right of way. Also, please return the sign after the Festival- we'll store them for next year.

     2. Donate canned drinks. We sell canned drinks at the Festival to offset some of our costs. Please bring canned soda or Gatorade to the Clinton Pl. entrance. We will have can recycling boxes at the festival, that is why we prefer cans.

     3. Pray. We need your prayers for favorable weather and a safe day.

     4. Volunteer. If you will be available on Friday evening (Aug. 20) or day of the Festival there are lots of jobs to be done in support. Just ask Debbie McCoy what you can do 926-1209 or 925-4649 or demccoy@bellsouth.net.

Patti's Notes

It has been a hot, but fast summer.  It is hard to believe that school starts this week.  Myrna Ruth and I have been listening to lots of music this summer.  We attended a workshop in Indianapolis July 31 and sang through new music for 6 hours.  We are planning and preparing new and old music for the fall and Christmas season.  We welcome new voices with open arms, no auditions required.

God’s Children Ring/Sing- Each Sunday 9-9:30 AM

SING Youth Choir- Our first rehearsal will be Sunday, August 22 at 4:15 PM.  We will not meet Sunday, September 5 on Labor Day weekend.

Handbells- We will start back this Thursday, August 12 at 6:15 PM.  We have beautiful and challenging music awaiting you.  At the end of rehearsals we will practice for the October 2 wedding.

Adult Choir- Thursdays at 7:00 PM.  We need new voices, so come and help us make a joyful noise.

Exercise

Strength Devine- Sundays at 2:00 PM.

Zumba- Sundays at 3 and Wednesdays at 7 PM.  No classes on Sunday, September 5, Labor Day Weekend.

Multicultural Festival- I need all youth voices to help sing America, the Beautiful at the Multicultural Festival on Saturday, August 21.  We will be singing at noon, so please gather around 11:30 so we can rehearse.

Appreciation for Adam & Teresa Quine

Adam Quine and his wife Teresa will be relocating to Louisville in order for Adam to attend Seminary.  Adam’s final Sunday with us will be this Sunday, August 15.  There will be a reception immediately following the 10:30 Worship service celebrating Adam and his service at FPCO.

Presbytery Meeting

The next Presbytery Meeting will take place this Saturday, August 14 from 10-2 in Mayfield, KY.  Please be in prayer for Rick Nash, Bill Jansing and Jonathan Carroll as they travel and for the Youth Council.

Taize Service

The next TaizÉ Service is Tuesday, August 17 at 7:00 PM in the Chapel. Named for an ecumenical Christian monastic community in TaizÉ, France, this worship experience is characterized by prayer, biblical readings, poetry, and singing. It is a quiet, contemplative style of worship that seeks to recover some of the ancient Christian spiritual practices within the context of community.
